Finished Front Porch Remodel - Daniel Builders

The Jolly Post Story: Part Four

The final episode of this series celebrates the transformation of a century-old home in Pendleton, South Carolina. The original home’s footprint covered about 2,200 square feet. The project scope included a two-story addition, bringing the finished home to approximately 3,900 square feet. That is a substantial change for a legacy property, and it presented a question that followed the team throughout construction. How do you give a family 1,700 more square feet while preserving their childhood memories?

The answer took shape in countless decisions, from the layout and finishes to the pieces carefully saved during demolition. In the final episode, Sam walks through the completed project and reflects on what those decisions meant to the homeowners.

The first time Lynn and her daughter Charlotte saw the finished house, Project Manager Sam Parkinson finally saw the fruit of his labor. For an entire year, he watched the house come apart and take shape again, room by room. He knew how much planning had gone into restoring the home’s character, from trim to salvaged materials. But seeing their reaction told him something the plans and progress reports could not: the project was a success.

A Year in Review

The work began with abatement and extensive demolition. As the team opened the walls, they discovered extensive termite damage. Reaching the finish line first required repairing and modernizing the existing structure.

It also required coordinating an unusually large scope. Sam recalls receiving a thick binder of drawings, elevations, and selections from the design team. Every page represented something that would eventually become a physical part of the house. Dozens of trade partners came together to produce the finished result.

That coordination rarely shows up in final photographs. You see individual elements, such as cabinetry, ceiling details, or a handsome mantel. What you don’t see are the hours of scheduling, the planning discussions, or the punch list that confirms the details of every nook and cranny. Sam describes the scale of this project as one of the biggest learning experiences of his career.

The clients lived elsewhere during construction. Sam made a point of communicating often so they could follow the changes in a house that they could not visit every day. That mattered for practical reasons, but it mattered personally, too. When a home holds this much family history, regular updates are essential for building trust between client and contractor.

Saving Grace

The finished home has new space and new finishes, but some of its most meaningful features were here long before the renovation began. The team salvaged materials during demolition and repurposed them. Reclaimed beadboard now covers the primary bedroom ceiling. A mantel and cast-iron grate from another bedroom were repurposed for that room as well, giving it a direct connection to the house Lynn knew growing up.

In the dining room, wainscoting was made from paneling salvaged from an previous home addition. Old lumber found a new purpose in the living room, where it became a beam wrap and a mantel.

Saving material was only part of the job. The new work also had to compliment the home’s historic character. Earlier in the series, Sam explained how the team studied the original trim and identified its Colonial Craftsman style before planning the new trim package. A doorway or a piece of molding can seem minor, but when repeated throughout a home, trim details influence a home’s cohesion and connection. This attention to detail unified the existing home with the addition and remodeled spaces, preserving its elegance and grace.

Room to Spare

Adding 1,700 square feet changed the home’s function. A two-story addition is not a minor adjustment to a home of this age, and the completed project is much more than a restoration. Now, the home has more room for daily life while retaining materials and design details that speak to where it began.

Now the home is a beacon of the past for future generations. Prior to the remodel, the house stood in Pendleton for over a century. The finished transformation respects that history while modernizing it for the years ahead.

That distinction mattered to Sam. As he describes in the final episode, he wanted the clients to walk through the renovated home and feel connected to the people and memories of the past. That’s something that’s hard to capture in a floorplan or rendering. It has to be felt in the finished space.

The work drew attention beyond the family, too. Because the house is familiar to the Pendleton community, neighbors were also curious about the project. Sam recalls giving tours to neighbors, visiting architects, and builders passing by.

Coming Home

Handing over the keys was bittersweet for Sam. The project was more than a job to him. It was personal. The time and relationships developed were worth celebrating, but finishing meant letting go so the owners could continue making memories. The Jolly Post stands as a testament of that legacy.
