BUILDING TRUST BLOG VALUES REVEALED Daniel Builders is holding fast to these values thru COVID19. < Back Will Cord 2020-03-18 How a business responds to a crisis reveals what they truly value. Here is the commitment of Daniel Builders thru COVID19. Your email is full of message after message from business after business telling you how they will address the COVID-19 crisis. Make no mistake, we are equally committed to taking every hygiene and sanitary precaution with our employees, clients, trades and community at large. We want to go a step further though. We want to aggressively deploy our values - Jesus Christ, Trust, and Generous Giving - in new ways. Here are 7 practical ways. Compassion - We can deliver items of need (medicine, food, or household goods) to those shut-in or at-risk. We can also help with urgent home repairs. We can’t meet every need, but we’re committed to meeting as many as we can. Stability - Panic will not be a determining factor for any decision about the business. Trust - Relationships we’ve built throughout the community are vital as ever. We’re doubling down on our mantra and tagline of “Building Trust”. Hope - You see what a person really hopes in when everything in their life feels threatened. We have a Living Hope that never loses power, and we will gladly share that hope. Endurance - Quitting, hiding, hoarding are the easy responses. They’re all terrible options though. We refuse to entertain them. Creativity - So far, the impact to our business has been minimal. We realize things could change dramatically though. If so, we’ll apply heavy doses of creativity to adapt to the market. Resource - For those committed to showing compassion during this time we make ourselves available to you as a resource. Are you contemplating a major home renovation? One of the most prestigious awards honoring South Carolina home building professionals. The Pinnacle Awards recognize the craftsmanship of the best home builders and remodelers in the Palmetto State. "THIS DESIGN-BUILD RENOVATION PRESENTED SOME UNIQUE CHALLENGES, BUT OUR TEAM ROSE TO THE OCCASION. WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY AND PLEASED WITH THE OUTCOME." - BOB CORD, DANIEL BUILDERS Beyond upgrading the dated interior, our clients' vision for this beautiful, lakefront home was capturing lake views from multiple vantage points throughout the main level. This required demolishing the center of the home and reconstructing it as an open concept living space. Interior walls were removed, and additional support added above the ceiling so guests experience the view immediately upon coming through the front door. No detail was overlooked as the original set of disjointed spaces were reimagined into a synergistic flow that now features an expanded custom kitchen, new walk- in pantry, mudroom, laundry space, gracious living area, new outdoor four seasons living space, and an elegant master suite. The main living space boasts a custom dry bar and a tiered peninsula that offers additional seating and frames the view from the kitchen. A custom fireplace surround and built-in bookcases beautifully anchor the open great room, while exquisite stone tile and Fantasy Brown marble accentuate focal points throughout the home, providing it with a seamlessly unified aesthetic inviting you to relax and enjoy. - GOING AIRBORNE - Building Trust Renovation Blog - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
Stop the spread of airborne diseases. BUILDING TRUST BLOG GOING AIRBORNE Stop the spread of airborne diseases. < Back Will Cord 2021-05-03 Health and wellbeing have been at the forefront of everyone’s mind over the past year, or more specifically avoiding COVID has been. Precautionary steps taken by Daniel Builders to minimize the spread of disease spread by airborne transmission. At Daniel Builders we aren’t health professionals, but here are 6 common sense ways to protect your respiratory health during a renovation. Dust & Particle Containment - Once you begin tearing down walls and ripping up floors the air inside your home becomes filled with all types of particles. Containing these particles is accomplished by putting up temporary barriers such as Zip Walls . Air Purification Equipment - Where will these airborne particles ultimately go? This is where having the right equipment such as BuildClean is important. A home normally has approximately 100K particles (larger than .5 micrometer) per cubic square foot of air. Whereas a home under construction has anywhere between 500K - 1M particles. HVAC - Change HVAC filters throughout the project and then once it’s complete. Air Out Building Materials - Before installing materials with high VOC (volatile organic compounds) levels such as carpets make sure they have time to first “air out” in a well-ventilated area. And if possible, keep windows open during installation. This reduces the risk of VOC when levels at they’re at their highest. Keep Paint Sealed - Be sure to keep paint cans and paint thinners sealed when not in use. Good Ventilation - The goal is to get clean/fresh air into your lungs. This is only possible if fresh air is circulating throughout your home. You're probably aware of the huge push to make buildings as energy efficient as possible. Which is great as long as air quality isn’t sacrificed. Learn how to get the good air inside . A clean, organized and safe work environment is one advantage to choosing Daniel Builders for your renovation (see all Six Advantages here ). Protecting the respiratory health of our clients is just another example of how we're committed to Building Trust. Are you contemplating a major home renovation? - RENOVATION HAPPINESS - Building Trust Renovation Blog - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
Create a mood altering renovation with colors, space and pleasant smells. BUILDING TRUST BLOG RENOVATION HAPPINESS Create a mood altering renovation with colors, space and pleasant smells. < Back Will Cord 2018-09-27 Renovated spaces that incorporate colors, nature, space and pleasant smells will have a positive impact on your mood. "How does that make you feel?" Asking this age-old psychiatric question is highly recommended as you consider ways to improve the space where you live. A few days ago, I came across these 7 décor characteristics that influence your emotions and wanted to share them with you. The Color of Your World In the early 1800s, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe proposed colors affect the human psyche in his book Theory of Colours . Although his interpretation of certain colors was not entirely accurate, his theory was confirmed through recent studies and experiments. Today, we know colors affect us on a psychological level. Here are some color correlations: Red - passion, warmth, intimacy Orange - energy, innovation Yellow - joy, creativity Green - relaxation, naturally soothing Blue - calming, refreshing Purple - luxury, sophistication Gray - relaxation, peacefulness Brown - relaxation, calmness, connection to nature Black - boldness, power White - cleanliness, purity, sterility Bringing Nature Indoors While there's nothing wrong with filling your home with modern conveniences, too much may leave the living space feeling sterile or impersonal. Such environments do little to reduce stress and feelings of anxiety. Psychologists recommend adding elements of nature to your environment to counteract a space that feels sterile. Bringing potted plants inside, keeping a bouquet of flowers on a table, and hanging paintings of outdoor scenes will help create a relaxed and welcoming environment. Clear the Clutter Clearing clutter is one of the most basic things you can do to improve a room’s vibe. We tend to let things pile up here and there. These eyesores affect our stress levels. You may not consciously be aware of it, but seeing clutter can cause you to tense up and feel anxious. Adding a cabinet space enhances the atmosphere and provide a place for storing papers, books, and other items. Increase Natural Sunlight The amount of natural light a room receives will also affect your mental state. Depending on how a home is situated, some rooms receive very little sunlight. Adding skylights can help, but there are also cheaper options. Try adding mirrors to the room, placing them at angles to capture the sun's rays. A mirror’s reflection also helps make a room look bigger. Add the Illusion of Space Rooms that are smaller and more confining can either be cozy or suffocating. If the room makes you feel claustrophobic, try to create more room. As previously mentioned, mirrors can add dimension to the room. Additionally, look for ways to leave the center of the room empty. Instead of a coffee table, add an extra end table. You can also add more artwork to draw the eye away from the size of the room. Take Advantage of Aromatherapy Adding scented candles is a simple, quick way to enhance a room's aroma. Alternatively, you might prefer investing in an essential oil diffuser. Whichever method you choose, look for scents that lead to a positive and relaxed emotional state. Lavender, cinnamon, and jasmine are just a few to consider. Invest in New Furniture If you're a crafty person, you might build your own tables or a chair from reclaimed wood. This brings your personal style to a room and promotes a more welcoming vibe. If your sofa and chairs don't help you feel relaxed, consider selling them and buying something a little different. Your home should be a place to relax and unwind, so keep that in mind, when shopping for new furniture. Paying closer attention to how your room makes you feel enables you to create a happier environment. People often tend to create a room by adding components that they like without giving thought to how those items will affect the overall environment. Visualizing possibilities of a living space will help you create something that feels good and welcomes guests openly. Feeling the need for a major renovation? Daniel Builders can assist you further as you process these feelings. - DIY OR NOT - Building Trust Renovation Blog - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
Don't try these renovation projects at home. BUILDING TRUST BLOG DIY OR NOT Don't try these renovation projects at home. < Back Will Cord 2019-04-02 When should you not attempt a DIY projects? Some home remodeling projects are best left to the experts. Big DIY projects require confidence, skill, and a huge reality check. Self-performing has its benefits. For starters you could save large quantities of money while experiencing the joy of personal accomplishment. (Nothing like beholding your own masterpiece!) Some DIY projects should be DDY projects though - projects you don't do yourself. This is especially true if the project requires a specialized skill such as plumbing, electrical, tile setting, etc. Attempting a DDY projects can cost you dearly in terms of money, time, personal health due to stress/injury, marital strain, and... even more money. The key is distinguishing which projects are DIY and which are DDY. So how do you tell the difference? Here are 7 “reality check” questions to consider before self-performing a renovation. What is my skill level? Pros make it look easy, but don’t be fooled. Not everyone is a pro. Some have a natural aptitude for carpentry, and it comes easy. Others not so much. Be honest with yourself when evaluating your skill level. A little self-awareness can prevent you from getting in over your head. How much time (and patience) am I prepared to invest? Beautiful renovations happen quickly on HGTV. They only take a 30-minute episode. Real life renovations take considerably longer and require significantly more patience. You’ll feel an urge to rush, but doing a renovation hastily is a mistake. You’re better off getting it right the first time. How much energy can I give my project? Renovation work is very physical and requires stamina. If you’re typically exhausted after your “day job”, a DIY renovation may require weekends. Just make sure you approach your project with mental and physical energy. Bad things happen when sleep deprived zombies try to renovate. Do I know an expert? If DIY was a game show, this is where you could “phone a friend.” Knowledgeable friends and contacts help you get unstuck as you encounter problems. Better yet let them know before you even start. They’ll likely share a few vital insights as you plan. Will I be safe? No renovation is worth serious injury. Stop immediately if you think you might be running that risk. Can I start with a smaller project? You don’t need to tackle large renovations to learn if you have a knack for DIY. Start small. Small projects are a great gauge for how well you’ll handle larger ones. You only put yourself ahead of the curve as you gain more experience. What’s the worst-case scenario if I do it myself? Resist being optimistic if you’re unwilling to consider the risk. The best advice for a DIY renovation is “Expect the best, plan for the worst, and prepare to be surprised.” - Dennis Waitley Are you contemplating a major home renovation? A historic home near downtown Pendleton South Carolina was completely remodeled by Daniel Builders with materials reused from the original home. TRADITIONAL INTERIOR Pendleton Bathroom Kitchen Whole Home This home was originally constructed over 100 years ago. Daniel Builders performed a full remodel of this beautiful historic home utilizing a Guide-Design-Build process. The house was stripped down to the studs and expanded with a two-story addition, resulting in an increase of total living space from 2,200 square feet to 3,900 square space. - TOOLED UP - Building Trust Renovation Blog - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
Care for tools like a true craftsman. BUILDING TRUST BLOG TOOLED UP Care for tools like a true craftsman. < Back Will Cord 2022-04-29 Craftsmen who care for their tools are likely take care of your home during a custom remodel. Albert Einstein once asked: “ If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign of ?” That’s witty and humorous, but let’s face it, when it comes to your work you want more clarity and less clutter. That’s precisely what our team at Daniel Builders strives for in our quest to be a World Class organization. Field staff (carpenters and project managers) aren’t working from a desk, but they do have mobile offices. Their trucks and vans serve this purpose. Keeping tools safe, secure and easily accessible is essential to our Build processes. Here’s why we emphasize an organized and clean work vehicle: Saves Time - Time is limited, and few things are more frustrating than searching for a missing tool. Looking for lost items is time consuming. A carpenter who’s able to access the right tool precisely when needed is utilizing time wisely. Afterall, carpenters are paid for their carpentry skills, not their ability to locate missing tools. Reduces Frustration - Complex Design-Build renovation projects are challenging enough. Adding additional aggravation is the last thing that's needed. Lost tools and an inefficient workspace will intensify frustration, not reduce it. Keeps Everyone Safe - Driving a vehicle full of tools is hazardous. Think about it, you have a vehicle full of potentially dangerous projectiles. Slamming the breaks will launch those projectiles if they’re not secured in their appropriate place. Keep those tools buckled up! Communicates Excellence - Being World Class is not just about what you produce, it’s also how you produce it. World Class workspaces are organized and focused. Your appearance and presentation are always communicating something, for better or worse. A disorganized vehicle reflects poorly on the brand you represent. Maximizes Tool Longevity - Keeping tools organized, easily accessible and safely secured translates to fewer damaged tools. In return they’ll serve you well for years to come. Allowing them to bounce in a truck bed or the back of a van reduces their usefulness over the long haul. Maintaining a clean and organized vehicle requires extra effort and focus, at least initially. In the long run it saves time and energy. Plus being World Class requires it. Do you want a World Class team working on your next Design-Build renovation? Project Manager Daniel Bailey narrates video of his renovation. BUILDING TRUST BLOG PM PERSPECTIVE Project Manager Daniel Bailey narrates video of his renovation. < Back Will Cord 2023-03-04 Here are two things everyone should know before hiring a contractor to transform their home. First, custom renovations can't be replicated. No 2 are alike. As a wise sage at Daniel Builders frequently says, "We're not building widgets." Not only does the scope of work vary from project to project, every home is completely different. So, producing the same thing never happens, hence the word " custom ". Second, no 2 General Contractors are alike. Each GC has a different approach, different standards and yes different outcomes. That's why it's a terrible idea to bid a project exclusively on price. Pardon the cliché', but you're not comparing "apples to apples". All that to say, a custom renovation usually comes down to one person being tasked to produce the right outcome. That's the Project Manager. A highly competent project manager has the best perspective on all that a custom renovation entails. In this video one of our project managers narrates the scope and challenges of his project. He's good at narrating, but as you'll see he's even better at his day job, being a project manager.
