Keep it dry under the deck. BUILDING TRUST BLOG DRY SPACE Keep it dry under the deck. < Back Will Cord 2021-03-01 Utilize outdoor space under a deck by keeping it dry. Blog showcases turning space under a deck into a dry area for hanging-out when raining. Finding extra space is a problem, but few realize they may be standing on the solution. Do you have a deck over 7ft tall? Recently one of our lead carpenters, Jeremy Kent, went to work underneath an existing deck to install the ZipUp Under-deck System . The result is beautiful (a definite upgrade in aesthetics) and practical (can be enjoyed rain or shine). Jeremy chronicles this project below. An "After" video is available here . - TOOLED UP - Building Trust Renovation Blog - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
Care for tools like a true craftsman. BUILDING TRUST BLOG TOOLED UP Care for tools like a true craftsman. < Back Will Cord 2022-04-29 Craftsmen who care for their tools are likely take care of your home during a custom remodel. Albert Einstein once asked: “ If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign of ?” That’s witty and humorous, but let’s face it, when it comes to your work you want more clarity and less clutter. That’s precisely what our team at Daniel Builders strives for in our quest to be a World Class organization. Field staff (carpenters and project managers) aren’t working from a desk, but they do have mobile offices. Their trucks and vans serve this purpose. Keeping tools safe, secure and easily accessible is essential to our Build processes. Here’s why we emphasize an organized and clean work vehicle: Saves Time - Time is limited, and few things are more frustrating than searching for a missing tool. Looking for lost items is time consuming. A carpenter who’s able to access the right tool precisely when needed is utilizing time wisely. Afterall, carpenters are paid for their carpentry skills, not their ability to locate missing tools. Reduces Frustration - Complex Design-Build renovation projects are challenging enough. Adding additional aggravation is the last thing that's needed. Lost tools and an inefficient workspace will intensify frustration, not reduce it. Keeps Everyone Safe - Driving a vehicle full of tools is hazardous. Think about it, you have a vehicle full of potentially dangerous projectiles. Slamming the breaks will launch those projectiles if they’re not secured in their appropriate place. Keep those tools buckled up! Communicates Excellence - Being World Class is not just about what you produce, it’s also how you produce it. World Class workspaces are organized and focused. Your appearance and presentation are always communicating something, for better or worse. A disorganized vehicle reflects poorly on the brand you represent. Maximizes Tool Longevity - Keeping tools organized, easily accessible and safely secured translates to fewer damaged tools. In return they’ll serve you well for years to come. Allowing them to bounce in a truck bed or the back of a van reduces their usefulness over the long haul. Maintaining a clean and organized vehicle requires extra effort and focus, at least initially. In the long run it saves time and energy. Plus being World Class requires it. Do you want a World Class team working on your next Design-Build renovation? We’d love to explore your big renovation ideas and tell you more about our Design-Build renovation processes. BUILDING TRUST BLOG HIDDEN PANTRY TOUR Want to get organized? This kitchen remodel offers some ideas! < Back Will Cord 2025-01-31 Want to get organized? This kitchen remodel offers some ideas! “A place for everything and everything has its place” is a proverb some say originated in the 17th century. It’s the perfect proverb for someone designing a custom kitchen pantry. In this award-winning kitchen remodel , Daniel Builders partnered with Carolina Closets to create a pantry characterized by order and accessibility. Lindsey Johnson is the design consultant from Carolina Closets who contributed to this kitchen’s transformation story. Because the best kitchen makeovers have a cohesive aesthetic, the pantry is worth highlighting. You wouldn’t know based on the photo below, but it’s hidden in plain view! Thanks to the Woodshop , the hidden pantry door blends seamlessly into the custom cabinetry. One of the challenges of any remodel is space planning. Daniel Builders has reconfigured countless kitchens so space is allocated to the client’s liking. While this project was being designed, the Daniel Builders team reworked portions of the floor plan to achieve better flow and functionality. The existing home had an 18-foot covered exterior entryway with flower beds on either side of the front door, but the flowerbeds were in an unusual place…under the roof! All in all, the space on either side of the entryway was completely wasted! The Daniel Builders design team repurposed 9 feet of the entryway into a hidden pantry and laundry room. They identified areas to demo (indicated in red below) to create the new hidden pantry floor plan. The walk-in pantry dimensions are approximately 5.5’ wide by 8’ deep. A window was also added to allow natural light to stream in. Once the walls were in place, the team knew they needed a pantry design expert to organize the space, and that’s when Lindsey Johnson with Carolina Closets got involved. If you’re looking for kitchen pantry organization ideas, Lindsey creates the perfect strategy to incorporate pantry inserts, organizers, and shelving systems. A few features of this hidden pantry include: 1. Adjustable shelves – great for cookbooks, small appliances, and food 2. Vertical dividers – great for pans, cutting boards, and serving platters 3. Wire baskets – great for snacks or vegetables 4. Drawers – great for serving utensils and food 5. A lazy Susan – great for spices Listen as Lindsay talks about the client’s inspiration, the design process, the installation timeline, and best of all, the finished product! She shares tips for overcoming space constraints to maximize storage in any pantry. Are you contemplating a major home remodel? Daniel Builders is holding fast to these values thru COVID19. BUILDING TRUST BLOG VALUES REVEALED Daniel Builders is holding fast to these values thru COVID19. < Back Will Cord 2020-03-18 How a business responds to a crisis reveals what they truly value. Here is the commitment of Daniel Builders thru COVID19. Your email is full of message after message from business after business telling you how they will address the COVID-19 crisis. Make no mistake, we are equally committed to taking every hygiene and sanitary precaution with our employees, clients, trades and community at large. We want to go a step further though. We want to aggressively deploy our values - Jesus Christ, Trust, and Generous Giving - in new ways. Here are 7 practical ways. Compassion - We can deliver items of need (medicine, food, or household goods) to those shut-in or at-risk. We can also help with urgent home repairs. We can’t meet every need, but we’re committed to meeting as many as we can. Stability - Panic will not be a determining factor for any decision about the business. Trust - Relationships we’ve built throughout the community are vital as ever. We’re doubling down on our mantra and tagline of “Building Trust”. Hope - You see what a person really hopes in when everything in their life feels threatened. We have a Living Hope that never loses power, and we will gladly share that hope. Endurance - Quitting, hiding, hoarding are the easy responses. They’re all terrible options though. We refuse to entertain them. Creativity - So far, the impact to our business has been minimal. We realize things could change dramatically though. If so, we’ll apply heavy doses of creativity to adapt to the market. Resource - For those committed to showing compassion during this time we make ourselves available to you as a resource. Are you contemplating a major home renovation? - WHY DESIGN - Building Trust Renovation Blog - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
Laurilyn Hall and Billy Zion discuss the Design Phase. BUILDING TRUST BLOG WHY DESIGN Laurilyn Hall and Billy Zion discuss the Design Phase. < Back Will Cord 2022-11-22 Can you start a custom renovation without doing any Design work? Laurilyn Hall and Billy Zion discuss how vital the Design Phase is in a custom renovation. Of course you can. Some say Design is unnecessary and suggest one skilled craftsman (or what we affectionately call Chuck & his Truck) can get the job done. Which, for the record, might actually be true, but it's a gamble... like jumping from an airplane without any certainty your backpack has a parachute. Best to verify before making the jump. Starting a custom renovation is a major decision requiring forethought and preparation. Design = Preparation. So, what does a well-crafted Design include? Renovating your whole home will require more Design time than a bathroom reno, but both have similar Design deliverables - a rendering, a detailed scope of work, and a completed list of selections (colors & fixtures). Of course, having a Builder involved makes the transition from Design to Build even smoother. In this episode of Ready, Set, Renovate! we have two guests well-acquainted with custom renovation Design. Billy Zion of Zion architects and Laurilyn Hall of Thrive Architectural Interiors sat down to discuss the benefits of a good Design. So, without further ado… Let’s get to it! - Open Contemporary Kitchen Lake Keowee - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
Walls throughout this renovation were removed allowing for the interior to be totally transformed to create a seamless, open floor plan between a stunning kitchen and great room with vaulted ceiling. OPEN CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN Lake Keowee 2020 Pinnacle Award Kitchen Multi Room This gorgeous lakeside remodel began with an intent to open up the compartmentalized floor plan taking full advantage of the impressive view, as well as to enhance the character of the home through unique architectural features and high-end finishes. The Daniel Builders design team and homeowner collaborated to concept an open layout, removing load bearing walls and creating a seamless flow between the entry, kitchen, dinette, and living area. Large sliding doors surrounded by new, custom windows and an arched transom maximize the lake view and modernize the aesthetic. These additions, along with large windows in the kitchen bring substantially more natural light into the home than existed before. The kitchen features approximately a hundred square feet of counter-to-ceiling glass tile backsplash and a 5’x9’ seamless island countertop of Skara Brae Polished Cambria. The living area boasts a custom fireplace with painted wainscoting and a Cambria surround. Overhead the vaulted ceiling is detailed with Timber Truss Beams that draw the eye to appreciate this focal point in the space. Nine hundred square feet of LVP flooring unifies the different spaces as a whole and the custom rail and wrought iron baluster design provides a beautiful anchor between the different living areas. No detail was too small nor left untouched in fulfilling our client’s vision for this lakeside retreat. Previous Next Back to Projects Gallery
- LET'S GO OUT ON THE DECK - Building Trust Renovation Blog - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
Warm weather has arrived, and at this time of the year it’s not uncommon to say, “Let’s go out on the deck!” While your deck is top of mind, it’s a good idea to do a deck safety evaluation. After all, May is “National Deck Safety Month”. Here is a checklist provided by the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) regarding what to look for when inspecting your deck. BUILDING TRUST BLOG LET'S GO OUT ON THE DECK While your deck is top of mind, it’s a good idea to do a deck safety evaluation. < Back Will Cord 2024-05-25 Warm weather has arrived, and at this time of the year it’s not uncommon to say, “Let’s go out on the deck!” While your deck is top of mind, it’s a good idea to do a deck safety evaluation. After all, May is “National Deck Safety Month”. Here is a checklist provided by the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) regarding what to look for when inspecting your deck. Evaluate flashing - NADRA describes flashing as “a metal or plastic guard that directs water out and away from sensitive areas. It’s often installed where the deck and house come together, keeping moisture and debris from collecting between the house and the deck’s ledger board.” [1] If you notice standing water in this area on your deck, you may need to replace the flashing. Evaluate wood surfaces - Even when a deck is built with composite materials, some aspects of the structure are still built using wood. For example, the ledger board will likely be made of wood. It’s often the culprit of deck failure. [Photo: Waller Before 1.jpg] Also inspect the decking, joists, posts, railing, banisters, and stairs for holes and decay. Holes can indicate an insect problem. There are three easy tests for rot and decay. 1) Can a screwdriver pierce the wood ¼ - ½ inch deep? 2) Does the wood splinter or break off in a clump? Splinters are a good sign that rot hasn’t set in. 3) Are any areas of the wood moist, spongy, or damp? Evaluate the fasteners - [Wooden Board – EnvatoStock.jpg] Evaluate fasteners, nails, and screws for corrosion. Rusty fasteners should be replaced as they can cause the wood to deteriorate. Nails and screws should be flush with the surface. Fasteners should be tight. Evaluate the stairs - Nothing could be a bigger safety hazard than insecure stair treads, risers, stringers, and railings (especially when the deck is high off the ground). [Photo: Waller Loose Handrail.jpg] If the riser area is open, the opening should not be larger than 4 inches. Keep stairways clear to prevent potential tripping hazards. Evaluate potential fire hazards - Be aware of the proximity of heat sources to flammable items. Read through manufacturer guidelines for grills, fire pits, etc. to review best practices for general safety and operating distance. Adjust placement if necessary. Lighting and electrical outlets are also included in this category. Outdoor electrical elements should adhere to code, be in working order, and be childproof. Evaluate outdoor furniture and storage - Ensure furniture, swings, and hammocks are in good working order. Secure grilling and chemical products out of reach of children. Evaluate the surrounding trees - Contact an arborist to prevent accidents due to falling limbs. Have a question about your deck or are you looking to build a new deck? - Traditional ADA Bathroom Verdae - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
ADA shower in master bathroom was part of an extensive renovation which aging in place as a key consideration for this project that garnered a Bridge Award for the highest degree of difficulty. TRADITIONAL ADA BATHROOM Verdae 2022 Bridge Award Bathroom One of the primary goals driving this renovation was opening the floor plan to enhance the ability of the homeowners to age in place. With concerns for mobility in the future, the client requested an ADA roll-in shower and the removal of the water closet in favor of a more open plan. Opening walls and expanding the shower also helped meet a secondary goal to increase the natural light in what was originally a fairly dark space. An early idea was to add or enlarge windows, but this brought some challenges including the exterior look of the home, privacy, and use of the outdoor space. Instead, fewer walls, the addition of glass, and the combination of gorgeous, reflective marble with a delicate Schumacher wall covering accomplished a bright and elegant space. Finally, the custom vanity features a built-in mirror on the linen tower. This feature, combined with the recessed drawer stack and breakfront counter top allows the homeowner a small niche where she can sit to use the vanity while still maintaining the needed storage space within the cabinets. The design team worked to address every functional detail to provide for the client’s needs while also capturing a classic interior style that blends seamlessly with the original design of this beautiful southern home.
