We're so serious about trust that we've identified five components to building it - Honesty, Communication, Connection, Commitment, and Competence. BUILDING TRUST BLOG TRUST BLUEPRINT Build trust with Candor, Competence & Commitment. < Back Will Cord 2022-01-31 Trust is a common value and tagline for businesses everywhere. As a renovation contractor we're building trust on the basis of competence, honesty, communication, connection, and commitment. It can't be built with passivity or indifference. And even though TRUST may feel uncertain at the start, there's no reason that feeling should continue. Trustworthy behavior doesn't take long to become apparent. Enduring TRUST isn’t blind TRUST. Here are 5 key building blocks for Building Trust. Honesty - Nothing builds TRUST more rapidly than speaking in a straightforward and truthful manner. Even major personality differences won't sabotage a relationship when transparency and factual communication prevail. Communication - Being super articulate isn’t necessary to foster TRUST through communication. Consistent communication is necessary though, even to the point of being uncomfortably repetitive. Speaking is only a small part of communication equation. Listening well is a higher priority. Simply paying attention leads to identifying and addressing faulty expectations before they undermine TRUST. And it’s vital to follow-up important conversations in writing. Competence - Being excellent and proficient at something will build TRUST. In the Bible there’s a proverb that says, “A person’s gift makes room for him, And brings him before great people.” (Proverbs 18:16). In other words, doing something really well creates such a high level of TRUST in your ability that you can't keep it a secret. Connection - Humans are wired with emotions. Emotion should be understood, but never manipulated. Honoring a person’s emotion shows a level of respect that is memorable. As Maya Angelou said, “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Commitment - All of these building blocks require repetition. At any moment trust can crumble if there’s no willingness to continue building. Someone once said TRUST is gained in drips but lost in buckets. In other words, the accumulation of TRUST is quickly lost by a single act of untrustworthiness. Disclaimer: What you're about to read has nothing to do with renovations. Still, if an award was given for our “Most Significant” blog post, this one would win by far. I’m sure you've our society has become increasingly panic-stricken. The news networks rarely tell us anything calming or good, and social media thrives on deception. All this bad news begs the question: Is good news out there? The answer is yes. Good still happens in our American culture. And it's worth finding. You need to know where to look though, or face being swept away by a tidal wave of negativity. So where is the good news? At Daniel Builders we recognize truly good news starts with God. He is doing good right now in our community, even as much of it goes largely unrecognized. The few recognizing this goodness are often at “rock bottom”. They have exhausted just about every option, but one -The Haven of Rest. The Haven specializes in helping people at rock bottom, and they frequently see God demonstrate amazing goodness. Recently, I sat down with Stu Butler, executive director of the Haven of Rest in Anderson. What he said is worth sharing. Will: Who comes to the Haven of Rest for help? Stu: Men and women struggling with a life dominating problem. Let me read you our Mission statement. The Haven of Rest exists to see those with life dominating problems rescued, restored and released while experiencing the love of the Lord Jesus Christ as commanded in the Great Commission of Matt 28:18-20. Will: What does getting help look like for someone struggling with a live dominating problem? Stu: We don’t advertise. We don’t have to advertise. Most people end up here by word of mouth. We have five pillars. Food. Shelter. Clothing. Christian Love. Biblical Guidance. If a person’s stomach is inside out from hunger, they can’t really listen very well. Or if someone is physically exhausted and they just need to lay down a while we can meet that need. So, we start by meeting basic needs, but that’s not where we stop. Will: What motivates you? Stu: The love of Christ, what He has done for me and what I see Him doing in other people’s lives. We see God doing miracles here every day and that is not only motivational but inspirational as well. I am motivated to leave things better than I found them. That is something that my dad taught me and it has stuck with me all these years. He did that and his legacy still lives on even though he passed away two years ago at age 92. I want to follow in my Father’s footsteps – both my earthly father and my heavenly Father. I want to leave a legacy that is larger than me and will last longer than me. Will: Have you seen an increase or decrease in desperate, “rock bottom” people? Stu: Unfortunately, we have seen an increase. Material poverty has been around for a long time but we also see spiritual poverty and relational poverty. Technology has connected us but also disconnected us and that creates relational poverty. So, we are ministering to men and women dealing with that as well. Interestingly in our low-tech ministry centers our men and women are forced to talk and to relate to one another. That can be a slow process at first, but they can learn to relate to their fellow sojourners and that is a great thing. If they can learn to relate to and love their fellow man who they have seen it helps them to see God who they have not seen. Will: How will the Haven continue seeing God at work? Stu: We stand on the truth and the basics, as long as we do that we will grow and see God at work. As we are faithful to God, He is faithful to us and gives us fruit for our labors. This is a faith ministry and what we have found is that God honors faith because faith honors God. We are so thankful for the support of the community, support which we depend on because we do not receive government funding for our programs. May God grant us all an ability to recognize His good news. Modify it to accommodate you as you age. How much thought have you given to your future living arrangements? For one of our customers the future had a sudden and unexpected twist which left him with a big decision to make. After a life altering injury his living arrangements needed to change. Where would he live? Fortunately, moving wasn't necessary, but modifying his house was. Daniel Builders designed and renovated a living environment to fit his level of physical ability. Renovations included widening doorways, replacing flooring with hard surface types, designing, and installing a curbless shower with grab bars, installing a wheelchair lift, and creating step-less entrances. At some point all of us need to evaluate our living arrangements due to age or injury. Assisted living facilities offer to meet long term physical needs when change becomes necessary. Problem is 1 in 5 Americans don't like the assisted living option, and prefer to age in their own homes. Universal Design (or UD) takes many forms , and ultimately addresses the desire to age in place . Universal Design creates accessible and accommodating living environments for those who otherwise would experience significant limitations living in their home. Elements of UD include maneuverability, ease of operation (specifically in the kitchen and bathroom), range of reach (ex. lowering countertops), and support (ex. grab bars). Due to our aging population, UD is rapidly becoming relevant for a growing number of people. New construction spec homes are even being designed based on UD principles. - 2022 Preservation Honor Award Winner - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
Daniel Builders recognized with a state honor by Preservation South Carolina for an historic renovation of a commercial building in downtown Anderson SC. 2022 2022 PRESERVATION HONOR AWARD WINNER HISTORIC BRIDAL BOUTIQUE Daniel Builders was named 2022 Preservation Honor Award Winner for their "East Benson Street" commercial renovation. A South Carolina Preservation Honor Award celebrates successful and exemplary historic preservation projects around the Palmetto State. Any individual, organization, government agency, or business involved in the preservation of historic buildings, structures, or sites (including archaeological sites, cemeteries, and landscapes) in the state are eligible to receive an Honor Award for a historic preservation project. "THIS BUILDING IS SO FULL OF HISTORY. WE WERE HONORED TO BE TASKED WITH RESTORING ITS ORIGINAL BEAUTY AND CHARM." - BOB CORD, DANIEL BUILDERS In the Fall of 2020, Daniel Builders assisted Danny Walker, a local businessman, with the rehabilitation of 106 East Benson Street, a commercial building on Anderson’s public square. Anderson’s downtown is primarily comprised of late 19th century brick commercial buildings, many of which have undergone unsympathetic renovations which have altered or destroyed their architectural integrity. This building was one of the most altered, the late Victorian ornamentation had been completely removed from the building and the entire façade, including the windows, was covered in grey painted stucco. The interior had also been obscured by vinyl floors and dropped ceilings hiding the original wood floors and beadboard ceilings. The building had sat vacant for years as an overlooked gap in the city’s historic streetscape, and while this rehabilitation could have retained the poorly planned changes the owner inherited, he decided to do more and take the building back to its former appearance. Historic images of the block allowed the team including Preservation South and Daniel Builders to identify the building’s remaining original features as well as other facades in the vicinity that retain those elements for replication as part of a tax credit rehabilitation. On the interior, additions were removed and the original floors were refinished, the plaster walls were repaired and the beadboard ceilings were patched and painted. The largest changes took place on the exterior, the later stucco façade was removed exposing the original brick and former window openings. The missing tin window hoods and parapet cornice were measured from other surviving examples and recreated using modern materials. The storefront was recreated based on historic images and the entire building was repainted in a more appropriate scheme that incorporated one of the tenant’s colors. The building now houses Katharine Marie Bridal on the first floor and a co-working space on the second. BUILDING TRUST BLOG GOING AIRBORNE Stop the spread of airborne diseases. < Back Will Cord 2021-05-03 Health and wellbeing have been at the forefront of everyone’s mind over the past year, or more specifically avoiding COVID has been. Precautionary steps taken by Daniel Builders to minimize the spread of disease spread by airborne transmission. At Daniel Builders we aren’t health professionals, but here are 6 common sense ways to protect your respiratory health during a renovation. Dust & Particle Containment - Once you begin tearing down walls and ripping up floors the air inside your home becomes filled with all types of particles. Containing these particles is accomplished by putting up temporary barriers such as Zip Walls . Air Purification Equipment - Where will these airborne particles ultimately go? This is where having the right equipment such as BuildClean is important. A home normally has approximately 100K particles (larger than .5 micrometer) per cubic square foot of air. Whereas a home under construction has anywhere between 500K - 1M particles. HVAC - Change HVAC filters throughout the project and then once it’s complete. Air Out Building Materials - Before installing materials with high VOC (volatile organic compounds) levels such as carpets make sure they have time to first “air out” in a well-ventilated area. And if possible, keep windows open during installation. This reduces the risk of VOC when levels at they’re at their highest. Keep Paint Sealed - Be sure to keep paint cans and paint thinners sealed when not in use. Good Ventilation - The goal is to get clean/fresh air into your lungs. This is only possible if fresh air is circulating throughout your home. You're probably aware of the huge push to make buildings as energy efficient as possible. Which is great as long as air quality isn’t sacrificed. Learn how to get the good air inside . Renovate your home to have maximum health benefits with air purification systems, soundproofing and water purification systems. Yes, it absolutely can be. During a renovation's Design phase, you have an opportunity to be intentional with options and features that have a positive impact on your overall well-being. Afterall, your home is meant to be a place where you sleep soundly ( when your body naturally heals itself ), think clearly, and even exercise effectively. Here are 8 ways to Design-Build a physically and mentally restorative environment. Air Purification - Clean air is essential to a robust respiratory system. When it comes to air purification systems there are numerous options from stand-alone systems to a complete overhaul of your home’s existing HVAC . Soundproofing - Noise compounds stress levels, especially when you’re trying to rest. Even those little annoying noises need to disappear while you unwind. There are several sound reducing techniques that can be incorporated into your renovation, ranging from sound dampening panels to additional layers of drywall to wall hangings .
