- TOOLED UP - Building Trust Renovation Blog - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
Care for tools like a true craftsman. BUILDING TRUST BLOG TOOLED UP Care for tools like a true craftsman. Back to Blog 2022-04-29 Craftsmen who care for their tools are likely take care of your home during a custom remodel. Albert Einstein once asked: “ If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign of ?” That’s witty and humorous, but let’s face it, when it comes to your work you want more clarity and less clutter. That’s precisely what our team at Daniel Builders strives for in our quest to be a World Class organization. Field staff (carpenters and project managers) aren’t working from a desk, but they do have mobile offices. Their trucks and vans serve this purpose. Keeping tools safe, secure and easily accessible is essential to our Build processes. Here’s why we emphasize an organized and clean work vehicle: Saves Time - Time is limited, and few things are more frustrating than searching for a missing tool. Looking for lost items is time consuming. A carpenter who’s able to access the right tool precisely when needed is utilizing time wisely. Afterall, carpenters are paid for their carpentry skills, not their ability to locate missing tools. Reduces Frustration - Complex Design-Build renovation projects are challenging enough. Adding additional aggravation is the last thing that's needed. Lost tools and an inefficient workspace will intensify frustration, not reduce it. Keeps Everyone Safe - Driving a vehicle full of tools is hazardous. Think about it, you have a vehicle full of potentially dangerous projectiles. Slamming the breaks will launch those projectiles if they’re not secured in their appropriate place. Keep those tools buckled up! Communicates Excellence - Being World Class is not just about what you produce, it’s also how you produce it. World Class workspaces are organized and focused. Your appearance and presentation are always communicating something, for better or worse. A disorganized vehicle reflects poorly on the brand you represent. Maximizes Tool Longevity - Keeping tools organized, easily accessible and safely secured translates to fewer damaged tools. In return they’ll serve you well for years to come. Allowing them to bounce in a truck bed or the back of a van reduces their usefulness over the long haul. Maintaining a clean and organized vehicle requires extra effort and focus, at least initially. In the long run it saves time and energy. Plus being World Class requires it. Do you want a World Class team working on your next Design-Build renovation? - GOOD TIMING - Building Trust Renovation Blog - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
Know the time it takes to renovate. BUILDING TRUST BLOG GOOD TIMING How to shorten your renovation timeline. Back to Blog 2018-02-13 Renovations can be unpredictable. Each is unique and creating a realistic timeline is part science, part art. One thing is certain: Accurate renovation timelines are based on careful legwork, not guesswork. How can you shorten your renovation timeline? Pay attention to small promises. Little things like arriving on time, receiving references when promised, and getting a follow-up call when scheduled all indicate how a contractor manages time, and ultimately how well he’ll manage your project. Speaking of references, check them. They, combined with online reviews help you evaluate a contractor’s promise keeping ability. Sometimes more in-depth information is available in the form of customer surveys . A track record of fulfilling promises (both large and small) indicates an ability to keep a project running on time. Seek “bad news” sooner than later. Large problems are avoided if they’re addressed early. For example, hearing about a delay a week before it happens creates a much smaller dilemma than finding out moments before it happens. What if out of town guests are coming and you need this step complete before their arrival? Suddenly making adjustment for everything else becomes significantly more difficult. Clarify the scope of work. Or maybe a better way to say this is Identify Your Assumptions . A detailed scope of work clarifies expectations for both customer and contractor. Know what is included and not included in your renovation. Forming a reasonable timeline is possible once expectations are clear. Without a detailed scope, assumptions eventually lead to confusion, frustration, inefficiency and delay. Not to mention, contractors can be held accountable when a clear scope is created and communicated in writing before construction. Make selections before construction. Deciding on the right fixtures, hardware, flooring, paint colors, etc can take time, but should never interfere with construction. Making these decisions during construction only bogs down the construction schedule. Get the drawings. Putting a well-crafted design or drawing on paper helps you and your contractor share the same vision for your renovation. Otherwise, you may visualize one thing and your contractor something entirely different. Don’t rely on your contractor to guess what you’re thinking. Inevitably, this leads to inefficiency and an unreliable timeline. Establish a fixed price. This may sound obvious, but starting a project based only on estimates is far too common, just like the delays they cause. Your goal as a homeowner is to eliminate unexpected costs. To be clear, not every uncertainty can be eliminated. What you find once you start tearing down walls is really anyone’s guess. The point is stopping a project because of cost will destroy a timeline. Know what you’ll pay before you start. Know the change order process. You as a customer may decide to increase the scope of your renovation during construction. This happens frequently, but an unclear change order process can lead to huge delays. Have your contractor clarify his/her change order process before moving into construction. Good contractors anticipate your questions/concerns in each of these areas and offer established processes for you to follow. As you consider your next renovation, save yourself time (and needless frustration) with an accurate project timeline, not based on guesswork. After all, a little extra legwork is well worth the time! Are you contemplating a major home renovation? - CABINET ACADEMY: HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR CABINET DESIGN MEETING - Building Trust Renovation Blog - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
This series outlines the main choices you'll make in a cabinet design meeting. BUILDING TRUST BLOG CABINET ACADEMY: HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR CABINET DESIGN MEETING This post outlines the main choices you'll make in a cabinet design meeting. Back to Blog 2025-12-19 This series outlines the main choices you'll make in a cabinet design meeting. Cabinetry is one of the most involved aspects of the design process. Whether you're remodeling a kitchen, bathroom, office, library, laundry room, mudroom, or bar area, the possibilities are endless...and can often be overwhelming! Solution: our Cabinet Academy! Special thanks to Trusted Tradesmen & Co. for their collaboration on this series! Decision #1 : Cabinet Style Cabinet style describes the relationship of the doors and drawer fronts to the face frame. Full Access ($) - (AKA Frameless) - the doors and drawer fronts cover the entire cabinet face with narrow gaps between each; the face frame is not visible. The aesthetic can be traditional, contemporary, or modern, depending on the door style. Face Frame ($$) - (AKA Overlay) - there are larger gaps between each set of doors and drawer fronts where the face frame is visible; the doors and drawer fronts rest on top of the face frame; the face frame is not flush with the doors and drawer fronts. Inset ($$$) - there are larger gaps between each set of doors and drawer fronts where the face frame is visible; the doors and drawer fronts close inside the face frame; the face frame is flush with the doors and drawer fronts. Decision #2 : Door Design A cabinet door is comprised of rails at top and bottom, stiles on left and right, and a panel in the center. During door design, you'll choose a material and style. Material Options: Wood Pros: Can be finished with lacquer or stain; less susceptible to water damage if the finish is dented; available in a variety of species and grain patterns: plain-sawn, quartersawn, and rift-sawn Wood Cons: Expands and contracts, especially in humid regions, which causes micro-cracks in the finish MDF Pros: Versatile; often used for custom designs & finished with lacquer; does not expand or contract MDF Cons: More susceptible to water damage if the finish is dented Style Options: Flat panel - for the contemporary aesthetic - Shaker cabinets fall into this category. The term "shaker" generally indicates a rail/stile width of 2.25". Microshaker cabinets have a rail/stile width of 3/4" - 1.5". The main distinction of shaker cabinets is the square profile of the inner edge, where the rails/stiles meet the panel. A traditional flat panel door has a curved or beveled profile at the inner edge. Raised panel - for the traditional aesthetic - The rails/stiles are often mitred at each corner; you'll choose a profile for the rails/stiles and the raised panel Slab - for the modern aesthetic - slab doors are comprised of a panel without rails or stiles. Decision #3 : Wood Species Pine ($) provides a rustic feel; less durable and will dent Alder ($) subtle grain; pink undertone Sapele ($$) straight grain pattern; cabernet color; modern replacement for mahogany Hickory ($$) highly figured grain pattern; takes stain well; doesn't dent easily White Oak ($$$) most prominent grain pattern and texture; doesn't dent easily; most popular species Walnut ($$$$) medium figured grain pattern; dark brown color The wood samples shown below are finished with clear lacquer, but the color of any species can be altered with stain, as shown in the alder, hickory, and white oak kitchen photos at the end of this section. We recommend lacquer over paint because it is waterproof, scratch-resistant, fast-drying, non-yellowing, and breathable. It comes in a variety of sheens, including matte, satin, semi-gloss, or high gloss. High gloss lacquer is often used for contemporary designs. Matte lacquer is more difficult to clean but best at camouflaging imperfections. Decision #4 : Glass & Mesh In addition to the flat panel, raised panel, and slab door styles, glass and wire mesh can be combined with wood or MDF to create a custom aesthetic. Glass with Traditional Frame - Available in many different varieties including clear, acid etched, fluted, flemish, and more! Glass with Mullion - Divided into sections by wood or MDF partitions. Glass with Custom Trim - Often made of MDF due to the wide range of design options. Mesh - Available as a flat or round wire in many different patterns and widths. Nickel and brass are common colorways. Types of Glass: Decision #5 : Shelving After cabinet style and door style have been established, you'll choose storage options, including shelving. Wood vs. Glass - Wood shelves can have a standard or live edge. Exposed vs. Hidden - Do you want to conceal your shelves behind a door? Fixed vs. Adjustable - Do you want the flexibility to adjust the spacing between shelves? Pull-out Trays - Common in kitchen islands and pantry units. Appliance Garage - Hides countertop appliances behind a door that opens vertically. Decision #6 : Inserts In addition to shelving, you'll choose additional storage options, including inserts. Appliance Lift - Keeps your countertops clear; great for mixers or blenders Rotating Shelf - Can't read the label? Easy reach for canned goods Utensil/Knife - Knife storage with plastic bristles; slot for cutting board; utensil bin Cookie Sheet - Multi-rack storage Trash Pull-Out - A cubby for trash + recycling or trash bin + trash bags Decision #7 : Drawers In addition to inserts, you'll choose drawer storage options: Knife Block - custom fit to drawer dimensions Utensil / Silverware - single or double layer Charging - built-in outlet for electronics Spice - single or double layer Cutting Board - dividers are adjustable Dish - pegs secure plates and bowls Appliance Panel - appliances, like this mini fridge, can be camouflaged with a drawer front You'll also choose hardware for drawers and cabinet doors: No Hardware/Push to open No Hardware/Notches Pulls Knobs Pull or Knob with Backplate Decision #8 : Adjustable Pantry The drawers in this pantry unit are adjustable so you can customize the space between each drawer for your needs. Decision #9 : Base/Feet In addition to drawers, you'll choose the base/feet design. The base of your cabinets can be simple or customized to mimic a piece of furniture. Straight Curved S-Curve Custom No Feet Decision #10 : Island Aesthetically, you can choose between several options for the ends of your island. Corbels and posts can achieve a traditional aesthetic. An overhang or panels may be used in transitional or contemporary designs. Waterfall edges can be seen in transitional, contemporary, or modern designs. Or, your island can be a combination of several of the options above! Decision #11 : Vent Hood Aesthetically, you can choose between several options for your vent hood. Straight Curved Angled Cut Corner Custom Decision #12 : Lighting Lighting options for your kitchen can be both functional and beautiful. In-cabinet lighting - displays heirloom pieces via an overhead fixture or strip of light near the front of the cabinet frame. Under cabinet lighting - illuminates your countertop workspace. Under counter lighting - provides visibility to storage spaces under your island. < Previous Next > Back to Blog SEE OUR WORK LET'S TALK We’d love to hear from you! - WINDOW TREATMENTS - Building Trust Renovation Blog - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
A room can go from being dark to being filled with natural light almost instantly. Choosing the right window treatments for your space and your needs is an art. BUILDING TRUST BLOG WINDOW TREATMENTS Choosing the right window treatments for your space and your needs is an art. Back to Blog 2023-08-02 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKRyBxMpUzs A room can go from being dark to being filled with natural light almost instantly. Choosing the right window treatments for your space and your needs is an art. Selecting the wrong window treatments can make a space seem incomplete and the windows look like an afterthought. “Dressing your windows is both about form and function. Yes, it is a vital finishing piece to make your space look aesthetically complete and even show personality, but it also gives you control over the light, ambiance, view and temperature in the room. ” says Hailey Evans owner of Design Your Dream . Here are five qualities to consider when selecting window treatments. Precision is a Prerequisite - The precision of the window treatments is necessary as it corresponds to the shape of the existing windows. Getting specific here involves knowing what type of window frame, as well as home style, receiving the treatment. For example, an arched window may take a valance treatment with overlapping fabric for high-end spaces versus standard slat blinds. The treatments that are tailored to "fit all" are useful for standard but windows with more character and flare should exude their potential. Durability is Indispensable - When choosing your options for your windows, durability is a must since it will be utilized daily. Quality material will contribute not only to the look of the treatment but also to its functionality. Materials to consider are wood, bamboo, and metal hardware, whereas sheer fabric or heavy drapery won’t be your best option. Functionality is Fundamental - What are your needs? Answering that question will narrow your search to the window treatment required. Select a treatment based on your comforts and everyday use. For some, privacy can be the focus while others tend toward blackout curtains for their young kids or request patterned curtains over Roman shades. Either way, a selection will be based on how the room will be utilized, as well as what maximizes comfort. Beauty is a Basic Necessity - Functionality is important, but a treatment must also provide just the right visual aesthetic. The pitfall would be comprising the overall look of the space. If items are competing, it creates a chaotic and overwhelming environment. On the contrary, a window treatment that suits the space ensures a calming and welcoming environment. Safety is Most Significant - Safety is an essential consideration, especially when young children live in the home. Faulty hardware or installation malfunctions are potential hazards. Being aware of safety pitfalls prior to selecting the treatment leads to selecting the right treatment without regret. Even treatments for a bachelor pad require an awareness of safety implications. Are you considering a major custom remodel of your home? Getting the window treatments right are very much part of a successful Guide-Design-Build remodel. - Transitional Open Concept McDaniel Ave - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
This home underwent a Guide-Design-Build renovation and was recognized for Best Kitchen and Best Bathroom by the Home Builders Association of Greenville in a Full Home Remodeling category. TRANSITIONAL OPEN CONCEPT McDaniel Avenue Area 2022 Bridge Award Basement Bathroom Kitchen Whole Home This home, built in 1937, was gutted from floor to ceiling. Engineered beams were used to open up a very segmented floor plan and create a better flow from the front to the rear of the home on the main floor. An additional eight hundred square feet was added by enclosing and completing the unfinished basement, transforming it into entertainment space. Throughout the course of this seven month renovation, this home's common areas, kitchen, bathrooms, utility rooms, and bedrooms were completely restored. Additionally, a large six hundred square foot deck with a parking area underneath was built. As expected in a home of this age, when walls were opened we discovered the entire house was completely uninsulated while none of the utilities were up to code. One highly complex element of this remodel requiring extensive engineering insight was removing multiple load bearing walls above a second story. Previous Next Back to Projects Gallery

Renovations to accommodate warm weather. BUILDING TRUST BLOG WARMING UP Renovations to accommodate warm weather. Back to Blog 2018-03-29 Believe it or not, nice weather is coming, and when it does, how do you plan to enjoy it? Here are 5 renovations for soaking up more of the great outdoors. Patio Doorways & Windows - Open your home to a better view, more natural light, and pleasant outside temps by installing large patio folding doors. And when no thermostat is required, welcome those glorious temps inside with folding windows. Porches and Decks - They make going outside easy. And in case you’re wondering, porches are covered, and decks are uncovered. A porch or deck renovation will add more space, aesthetic appeal, and value to a home. Gazebos or Pergolas - Relatively easy and inexpensive to build, these structures also add value to your home. They provide a designated space for outdoor relaxing. Pergolas offer more light with open rafters while gazebos have a covered roof for more shade. Hardscapes - Two words: Low Maintenance. Unlike grass, these hard surfaces won’t grow weeds or require water. Instead, this renovation enhances the visual appeal of your landscape, while providing more space for outdoor entertaining. Outdoor Kitchens - No traveling to a restaurant required. Fine dining is waiting just beyond your back door. And strong food odors? These unwelcome guests stay outside. - NEW YEAR SPECULATIONS - Building Trust Renovation Blog - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
Tracking Trends in the Guide Design Build realm. BUILDING TRUST BLOG NEW YEAR SPECULATIONS Tracking Trends in the Guide Design Build realm. Back to Blog 2020-12-31 Tracking Trends in the Guide Design Build realm. As 2020 disappears in the rear-view, a simple question comes to mind. What will 2021 be like? We won’t attempt to delve into the societal/political/pandemic issues, but we do have some pretty clear ideas regarding residential renovations in the new year. Much of what is coming in 2021 is related to the new “way-of-life” that developed in 2020, a year many spent indoors. Daniel Builders has no crystal ball, and we’re not interested in endless speculation. Fortunately, crystal balls aren’t necessary. In 2021 these 7 aspects of your home will take on even greater significance. Adding Closet and Cabinetry Space - Clutter can become depressing quick. Especially if you’re looking at it all day every day. The goal is having the optimal amount of storage space to keep your home clutter-free. Cabinetry can be added to otherwise “dead” space and there are literally endless ways to upgrade your closet . Enhancing the RESTroom - More commonly known as the Bathroom, which is meant to be a place to escape, relax and recharge . And with the stress of this past year, such a room is even more vital to your home renovation. Taking walls down - Opening up your home (ie. removing walls) will continue to be trend in 2021. The non-load-bearing walls in your home typically are not difficult to remove . Something to keep in mind when your renovation includes the walls of a closet. As for a load-bearing wall, consulting with a structural engineer is always good idea. Creating a Productive Sanctuary - Home gyms and home office renovation projects are more common now more than ever. So, whether you’re working remotely or working out, you are likely working at home more. This means designing spaces to maximize your focus, motivation and productivity. Adding another dwelling - Multigenerational dwellings are trending up. This isn’t just for those extra-large homes either. It could be creating a mother-in-law suite in an existing structure, doing a major addition, or building an accessory dwelling unit (ADU). Going Outside - In the coming year everything from outdoor kitchens to outdoor fireplaces will grow in popularity - an area of renovation referred to as hardscapes , and the options are truly limitless. The importance of hardscapes in 2021 is they will keep you from being “cooped up” inside. Improving the View - What do you want to look at on a daily basis? More than ever, home renovations will take into account the mood-altering impact of paint colors, flooring, décor , and lighting. Designers will be tasked with creating a home environment of positive vibes. These topics are great discussion starters when meeting with a renovation contractor. Our Design team (including architect and interior designers) are equipped to guide you through the process of enhancing your home in 2021. Speak with a Daniel Builders project guide by calling 864.506.5546 and discuss the best path forward for your custom renovation or get your renovation started here! One last thing.
