Create a mood altering renovation with colors, space and pleasant smells. BUILDING TRUST BLOG RENOVATION HAPPINESS Create a mood altering renovation with colors, space and pleasant smells. < Back Will Cord 2018-09-27 Renovated spaces that incorporate colors, nature, space and pleasant smells will have a positive impact on your mood. "How does that make you feel?" Asking this age-old psychiatric question is highly recommended as you consider ways to improve the space where you live. A few days ago, I came across these 7 décor characteristics that influence your emotions and wanted to share them with you. The Color of Your World In the early 1800s, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe proposed colors affect the human psyche in his book Theory of Colours . Although his interpretation of certain colors was not entirely accurate, his theory was confirmed through recent studies and experiments. Today, we know colors affect us on a psychological level. Here are some color correlations: Red - passion, warmth, intimacy Orange - energy, innovation Yellow - joy, creativity Green - relaxation, naturally soothing Blue - calming, refreshing Purple - luxury, sophistication Gray - relaxation, peacefulness Brown - relaxation, calmness, connection to nature Black - boldness, power White - cleanliness, purity, sterility Bringing Nature Indoors While there's nothing wrong with filling your home with modern conveniences, too much may leave the living space feeling sterile or impersonal. Such environments do little to reduce stress and feelings of anxiety. Psychologists recommend adding elements of nature to your environment to counteract a space that feels sterile. Bringing potted plants inside, keeping a bouquet of flowers on a table, and hanging paintings of outdoor scenes will help create a relaxed and welcoming environment. Clear the Clutter Clearing clutter is one of the most basic things you can do to improve a room’s vibe. We tend to let things pile up here and there. These eyesores affect our stress levels. You may not consciously be aware of it, but seeing clutter can cause you to tense up and feel anxious. Adding a cabinet space enhances the atmosphere and provide a place for storing papers, books, and other items. Increase Natural Sunlight The amount of natural light a room receives will also affect your mental state. Depending on how a home is situated, some rooms receive very little sunlight. Adding skylights can help, but there are also cheaper options. Try adding mirrors to the room, placing them at angles to capture the sun's rays. A mirror’s reflection also helps make a room look bigger. Add the Illusion of Space Rooms that are smaller and more confining can either be cozy or suffocating. If the room makes you feel claustrophobic, try to create more room. As previously mentioned, mirrors can add dimension to the room. Additionally, look for ways to leave the center of the room empty. Instead of a coffee table, add an extra end table. You can also add more artwork to draw the eye away from the size of the room. Take Advantage of Aromatherapy Adding scented candles is a simple, quick way to enhance a room's aroma. Alternatively, you might prefer investing in an essential oil diffuser. Whichever method you choose, look for scents that lead to a positive and relaxed emotional state. Lavender, cinnamon, and jasmine are just a few to consider. Invest in New Furniture If you're a crafty person, you might build your own tables or a chair from reclaimed wood. This brings your personal style to a room and promotes a more welcoming vibe. If your sofa and chairs don't help you feel relaxed, consider selling them and buying something a little different. Your home should be a place to relax and unwind, so keep that in mind, when shopping for new furniture. Paying closer attention to how your room makes you feel enables you to create a happier environment. People often tend to create a room by adding components that they like without giving thought to how those items will affect the overall environment. Visualizing possibilities of a living space will help you create something that feels good and welcomes guests openly. Feeling the need for a major renovation? Generate design ideas and communicate them with photos. BUILDING TRUST BLOG PICTURE THIS Generate design ideas and communicate them with photos. < Back Will Cord 2020-01-22 How photos generate great design ideas and have other benefits in the renovation process. Remodelers love showing off their work. We definitely do, and photos are a great way. Our growing portfolio of photography is an important part of our business, giving visual evidence of our capability. Here’s a little secret though. We can renovate to the level of any photo you find. Yes, all Houzz and Pinterest renovations are doable. In fact, if you are considering a renovation, I’d encourage you to start with photos. Here are 7 reasons why, Photos are great for inspiration - Sometimes you don’t know what you want until you see it. Photos inspire so many great ideas, helping you narrow down the look and scope of your renovation. Photos are great for communication - You may understand what you want, but does your contractor? Using a picture could save you a thousand words. Never start a renovation until you’re certain your contractor shares your expectations. Photos are great for visualization - An architect or designer can use photos to create a plan unique to your living space, helping you and your contractor clearly visualize the outcome. A design literally puts you, the designer and contractor all “on the same page”. Photos are great for selections - Choosing paint colors, fixtures and flooring is easier when you see them in a photo of a completed renovation. Otherwise, you will start with an endless list of samples, which is tedious and trying. (*Note: Seeing samples are a good idea once you’ve narrowed down the options. A good interior designer will arrange this.) Photos are great for valuation - Pricing a project becomes a little more straightforward when you see what you’re purchasing. A picture helps a contractor identify all the necessary selections and specs, and thus price your renovation accordingly. Your goal should be to arrive at a fixed cost before you start demo. Photos are great for evaluation - Not to be confused with #5 , valuation . Having photos at the onset helps you evaluate at the end. They help you answer: Were my expectations met? Photos are great for emotion - Emotion obviously plays a big role in major purchases. You definitely want to be happy with the renovation you purchase. A photo gives you a small taste of what you will “feel” when your renovation is complete. Are you contemplating a major home renovation? - WINDOW TREATMENTS - Building Trust Renovation Blog - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
A room can go from being dark to being filled with natural light almost instantly. Choosing the right window treatments for your space and your needs is an art. BUILDING TRUST BLOG WINDOW TREATMENTS Choosing the right window treatments for your space and your needs is an art. < Back Will Cord 2023-08-02 A room can go from being dark to being filled with natural light almost instantly. Choosing the right window treatments for your space and your needs is an art. Selecting the wrong window treatments can make a space seem incomplete and the windows look like an afterthought. “Dressing your windows is both about form and function. Yes, it is a vital finishing piece to make your space look aesthetically complete and even show personality, but it also gives you control over the light, ambiance, view and temperature in the room. ” says Hailey Evans owner of Design Your Dream . Here are five qualities to consider when selecting window treatments. Precision is a Prerequisite - The precision of the window treatments is necessary as it corresponds to the shape of the existing windows. Getting specific here involves knowing what type of window frame, as well as home style, receiving the treatment. For example, an arched window may take a valance treatment with overlapping fabric for high-end spaces versus standard slat blinds. The treatments that are tailored to "fit all" are useful for standard but windows with more character and flare should exude their potential. Durability is Indispensable - When choosing your options for your windows, durability is a must since it will be utilized daily. Quality material will contribute not only to the look of the treatment but also to its functionality. Materials to consider are wood, bamboo, and metal hardware, whereas sheer fabric or heavy drapery won’t be your best option. Functionality is Fundamental - What are your needs? Answering that question will narrow your search to the window treatment required. Select a treatment based on your comforts and everyday use. For some, privacy can be the focus while others tend toward blackout curtains for their young kids or request patterned curtains over Roman shades. Either way, a selection will be based on how the room will be utilized, as well as what maximizes comfort. Beauty is a Basic Necessity - Functionality is important, but a treatment must also provide just the right visual aesthetic. The pitfall would be comprising the overall look of the space. If items are competing, it creates a chaotic and overwhelming environment. On the contrary, a window treatment that suits the space ensures a calming and welcoming environment. Safety is Most Significant - Safety is an essential consideration, especially when young children live in the home. Faulty hardware or installation malfunctions are potential hazards. Being aware of safety pitfalls prior to selecting the treatment leads to selecting the right treatment without regret. Even treatments for a bachelor pad require an awareness of safety implications. Are you considering a major custom remodel of your home? Getting the window treatments right are very much part of a successful Guide-Design-Build remodel. - MUDROOM MASTERPIECE - Building Trust Renovation Blog - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
Make the mudroom spectacular. BUILDING TRUST BLOG MUDROOM MASTERPIECE Make the mudroom spectacular. < Back Will Cord 2020-07-23 Recently Daniel Builders was approached by an editor/writer from Houzz.com seeking to interview our Design team about this recent mudroom renovation. Being honored, we agreed and plan to highlight the interview on our social media platforms once published. The request from Houzz raises a question though. Why give attention to mudrooms? Short answer: Houzz realizes Mudrooms are kind of a big deal these days. Maybe not as popular as Kitchen/Bath renovations, but that could be changing. We’re seeing clients take a very serious and intentional approach to designing this area of their home. Below is another example. Five facets factoring into a fabulous mudroom are: Functionality - the mudroom is where work gets done and muddy kids with soccer cleats come. During design think durable with easy accessibility to cabinetry, countertops, coat racks, and shoe storage. Imagine a space to handle mounds of laundry and where yard work warriors transition back indoors. Simplicity - don’t overcomplicate it. Maintaining a minimalistic mindset during Design will serve you well. The layout essentially comes down to four basic features: cleaning (sink/washer/dryer), folding (countertops), storage (cabinetry), and space to hang coats/clothes. Cabinetry - aka more storage. Face it storing stuff is a major part of home life these days. Additional cabinetry is a great way to combat the clutter. And the mudroom is a way better option than other rooms meant for relaxing or entertaining. Countertops - to sort/fold/stack laundry and temporarily place random items you carry into your home. Countertop installation can be modified by height, depth, and surface to maximize your every move. Customized - yes customizing to your taste is important. With the right Design you can achieve a “delighted-to-be-here” feeling the moment you walk in. Let your style shine when selecting paint, flooring, cabinetry, and countertop surfaces. Highly functional mudrooms can also be refreshingly stylish. Bottom line, you want to love every room of your home, even the one that starts with “mud”. Are you contemplating a major home renovation? - RENOVATION VS REMODEL - Building Trust Renovation Blog - South Carolina - Daniel Builders
Home improvements can breathe new life into your living space. New projects enhance your home's functionality, appearance, and value. When you think about making changes to your home, you may think of renovate or remodel. These terms are often used interchangeably but they refer to two types of projects with distinct goals and scopes. BUILDING TRUST BLOG RENOVATION VS REMODEL The differences between a home renovation and a home remodel. < Back Will Cord 2023-07-28 Home improvements can breathe new life into your living space. New projects enhance your home's functionality, appearance, and value. When you think about making changes to your home, you may think of renovate or remodel. These terms are often used interchangeably but they refer to two types of projects with distinct goals and scopes. Today, we will explain the differences between a home renovation and a home remodel. This will help you understand which option will work best for your needs. Before we explore the differences, let's define both renovate and remodel and explore the differences of renovation vs restoration. Renovation is when we update your space without making large-scale changes to your home. It might involve improvements to existing features, fixtures, and finishes in your home. The goal is to enhance your home's appearance, functionality, or both. Common renovations include new paint or flooring, an upgrade to appliances, or adding new fixtures. Remodeling, on the other hand, involves changing the structure, layout, or purpose of your space. Remodeling may include big changes to your existing structure. You might be adding or tearing down walls, rearranging rooms, or even increasing your square footage. The purpose of a remodel is to transform the space to suit your family better or to accommodate new needs. When deciding between a home renovation and a house remodel, several factors should be considered: Remodeling and renovation cost - Renovations generally tend to be more cost-effective compared to full-scale remodels. Renovations are more cosmetic updates and minor repairs, which are less expensive than bigger changes. Remodels often require architectural planning, permits, and construction work, resulting in higher costs. Scope and Timeframe - Renovations tend to be smaller in scale, so they can be finished faster than a remodel. Since renovations focus on updating things already there, they involve less demo and construction. This will make your project wrap up faster. Remodels often involve major construction work, making the project take longer. Goals and Objectives - When deciding between a renovation and a remodel, think about your goals. Renovations are perfect to update the look of your space or to upgrade certain features without changing your current home. Remodels are better when you want to create a more functional or even more personalized space. Or if you are looking to address specific needs such as expanding a kitchen or adding a bathroom. Structural Considerations - If your home has structural issues or outdated layouts that don't meet your needs, a remodel may be the best option. Remodeling changes the floor plan and structural modifications to accommodate your perfect place. Since renovations focus on improving existing elements, they may not address structural problems. Restoration Renovations and remodels should not be confused with restoration. Restoration is returning a home to its original or historically accurate state. Restoration projects are common for historic buildings or properties with architectural significance. The goal here is to maintain the cultural value and authenticity of the home. This may involve using traditional construction techniques and materials as much as possible. Remodel vs Rebuild We should also note that remodeling is not the same thing as rebuilding. Rebuilding involves demolishing a significant part or even the entire existing structure. A new building is then constructed in its place. A rebuild starts from the ground up. You might need a rebuild if 1) the existing building is severely damaged 2) if it is structurally unsound, or 3) if it is outdated beyond a workable repair. A rebuild offers a completely fresh start. It also allows you to design and build a property that better suits the needs of you and your family. Remodel vs New Construction You may be wondering if renovation or remodeling is worth the effort compared to building a new home. New construction does have advantages as far as customizing and using modern technology and materials. Your preferences, budget, timeline, and the condition of your current home will impact your decision to choose between remodeling, renovation, or new construction. Evaluating these differences can help you make an informed decision that best suits your needs and goals. Remodeling or renovating an existing property offers several benefits compared to new construction. Here are some of the key advantages: Cost-Effectiveness - Generally, remodeling or renovating an existing property is more cost-effective than new construction. With remodeling, you can reuse some of the existing materials and infrastructure. This reduces the need for new building materials and the associated costs. Faster Completion - Remodeling projects typically have shorter timelines compared to new construction. Since the basic structure is already in place, the project moves faster, which allows you to enjoy the updated space sooner. Preserving Character - Many older properties have a unique character and charm. Those things can be preserved and enhanced through thoughtful renovation. Renovating allows you to keep the historical or sentimental value of the property while making it more functional. Minimal Disruption - Remodeling a property often causes less disruption compared to new construction. The surrounding neighborhood and environment are more affected by site work and new construction. Environmental Impact - Remodeling or renovating an existing property can be better for the environment than new construction. It reduces the demand for new building materials and minimizes construction waste. Location Benefits - Older properties are often situated in established neighborhoods. This means existing infrastructure, amenities, and services. Renovating or remodeling an existing property takes advantage of these benefits and updates the space to meet your needs. In the end, deciding if a home renovation or a remodel is right for you will depend on your goals, budget, and the scope of the changes you want. Renovations are the way to go if you are updating existing spaces or making cosmetic improvements. Remodels are better suited if you are looking for major layout changes or additions. It is important to weigh the needs of your home and your family. Consult with professionals to transform your home into the space of your dreams. See your custom renovation in 3D before its reality. BUILDING TRUST BLOG BE CLEAR See your custom renovation in 3D before its reality. < Back Will Cord 2020-11-12 Our Design team can utilize 3D renderings like these on large, multi-room renovations. They are unbelievably realistic, and sometimes difficult to distinguish from an actual photograph. In addition to this WOW factor, 3-D renderings have 7 practical benefits for both client and contractor. Clarifies Vision - Why waste a thousand words (or more) when a picture is available? A rendering can accelerate clarification for all involved in the renovation process and provides far more clarity than 2D renderings. Identifies Problems - Is the renovation feasible to build? A 3D rendering helps identify structural integrity issues and enhances spacial awareness. Reduces Delay - What is the #1 way to ensure a successful renovation? Answer: Establish shared expectations between contractor and client. Unshared expectations cause inefficiencies, frustrations, and can easily turn into a renovation train wreck. A 3D rendering showcases an outcome everyone can understand. Reveals Options - Is there a mental block regarding Design ideas? A clear project rendering triggers ideas and inspiration. Optimizes Distribution - Would hearing the opinion of others be helpful? 3D rendering software is easy to upload and share via Dropbox. Being able to efficiently share a rendering allows for rapid feedback from friends and family. Strengthens Accountability - Does the renovation match the 3D rendering? If not, why not? A 3D rendering creates a visual agreement between contractor and client. It’s the standard by which a finished renovation can be evaluated. Any discrepancy can be traced to a responsible party. Prevents Letdown - Are you happy with the finished product? No one wants to regret a big purchase. And a contractor especially doesn’t want (or shouldn’t want) anyone to experience buyer’s remorse. Afterall happy clients are the link to future business. Seeing the finished renovation before moving forward minimizes letdown. Blindly buying a custom renovation isn’t necessary. See it first with a 3D rendering and move into the build process with confidence. Are you contemplating a major home renovation?
